PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will seek its sixth straight victory Tuesday (Apr. 18) when the Gorillas play host to MIAA rival Missouri Southern State University. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. (CDT) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas enter Tuesday's action 17-22 overall and 11-14 in MIAA play. Pitt State swept a three-game MIAA series from the University of Nebraska-Kearney over the weekend. The Gorillas opened their current five-game win streak by beating Northeastern State University, 4-3, on Apr. 4. Pitt State added a 9-3 road win over MSSU on Apr. 11 before taking all three games against the Lipers.
The Lions are 21-21 overall and 13-15 in MIAA play. MSSU dropped two of three games over the weekend against UCM. The Lions pulled out a 9-7 win over the Mules last Saturday (Apr. 15) to halt a six-game losing streak.
As a team, Pitt State is batting .313 on the season and averaging 7.6 runs per game, while its opponents are batting .296 and scoring 7.5 runs per game. The Gorillas have a 6.48 team ERA. MSSU is batting .298 as a team and scoring 7.6 runs per game. The Lions have a 5.86 team ERA.
Pitt State has four players batting better than .340 on the season – junior second baseman Dallas Reed (.391), junior shortstop Colton Pogue (.358), junior catcher/designated hitter Ethan Schlesener (.352) and junior outfielder Hunter Clanin (.340). Reed leads the squad in run scored (51), doubles (14), home runs (8) and RBIs (47).
