PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team used a pair of big innings to claim a 13-7 victory over Missouri Southern State University Tuesday (Apr. 18) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas (18-22, 12-14 MIAA) won their sixth straight game thanks to a five-run third and a six-run sixth inning against the Lions (21-22, 13-16 MIAA), who dropped their 11th decision in 13 games.
Ethan Schlesener's RBI triple gave Pitt State a 5-4 lead in the third inning after the Gorillas fell behind 4-0 and surrendered two runs apiece in the first and second innings. Andrew Vogelbaugh added a two-run double in the third and T.J. Martin came through with a run-scoring double.
Martin added a three-run home run as part of Pitt State's six-run sixth as the Gorillas broke up a 7-7 game in the frame. Hunter Clanin gave Pitt State the lead for good with a two-run bloop single and Vogelbaugh added a second RBI double in the contest.
Cooper Gardner (7-1) worked 2 2/3 innings of relief to pick up his third win in four games for the Gorillas. Cody Whiting registered the final two outs in the ninth to help lock down the win.
Vogelbaugh and Colton Pogue each collected three hits in the contest as Pitt State outhit MSSU 18-13 .
The Gorillas will open a three-game MIAA series Friday (Apr. 21) against Southwest Baptist University at Al Ortolani Field.
