Gorillas to Host Lopers and Tigers

PITTSBURG, Kan.—Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Volleyball is set to warm up John Lance Arena on Friday and Saturday. The Pittsburg State University Volleyball team is set to host the No. 3 ranked University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers and the Fort Hays State University Tigers. Both matches are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
 
Scouting the Gorillas
  • The Gorillas are coming off three set loss to Missouri Southern on Tuesday night in Joplin.
  • Pitt State enters the game with a 9-9 overall record and a 6-4 record in the MIAA.
  • Head Coach Jen Gomez, who is in her third season at the helm, enters the match with a 40-71 record.
  • The Gorillas are hitting .183 on the season while holding opponents to a .185 attacking percentage.
  • Senior outside hitter Erika Ivkov (Ward, Colo.) leads Pitt State with 23 service aces and 205 kills, both are team-highs.
  • Marissa Bates is the top defensive player with 244 digs on the season.
  • Friday's match will be the fifth team that the Gorillas will play this season that is ranked in the Top-25 where they are 0-5 and have only mustered up one set win (1-9).
 
Scouting the Lopers
  • Nebraska-Kearney enters the weekend with a perfect 18-0 overall record and a 9-0 MIAA record. The Lopers enter the week ranked No. 3 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 poll.
  • The Lopers are coached by Rick Squiers, who is in his 20th season. He enters with a 655-88 overall record at the helm at Nebraska-Kearney.
  • The most efficient hitters in the main rotation are middles Anna Squiers (.316) and Michaela Bartels (.279) with junior right side Mary Katherine Wolfe at .262. Defensively sophomore libero Lindsay Nottlemann (5.05), senior outside Julianne Jackson (3.55) and junior setter Madison Squiers (3.26) lead in digs per set.
 
Scouting the Tigers
  • The Tigers enter the weekend with a 6-11 overall record and a 3-6 MIAA record.
  • The Tigers are in the middle of a tough October schedule that has them playing eight of ten games on the road.
 
History with these opponents
  • The Lopers are 12-0 since 2012. The Gorillas are on a 22-game losing streak to UNK as their last win was a 3-2 win in 1983.
  • FHSU is 33-30 all-time against in-state rival Pittsburg State. The Gorillas are on a three-game winning streak against the Tigers.
 
Up Next
  • After this weekend the Gorillas stay inside John Lance Arena for a Tuesday match up with the University of Central Oklahoma at 6 p.m.
  • They will than return to the road next Friday and Saturday for tilts with Central Missouri (Friday) and Northwest Missiuri (Saturday).
