LUBBOCK, TEXAS—Looking to build on a 4-0 start to the 2019 campaign, the Pittsburg State University volleyball team will battle for four more wins on Friday and Saturday as they travel down to Texas to participate in the Chap Classic, hosted by Lubbock Christian University at the Rip Griffin Center.
The Gorillas will open the tournament by taking on the host Chaparrals on Friday at 1 p.m. They will then play Dixie State at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Pitt State will play Black Hills State University at 9 a.m. and Texas Permian Basin at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Gorillas
- The Gorillas enter the season with a 4-0 record and look to match or best last year's 7-0 start to the season. Last week Pitt State defeated East Central University (3-0), Midwestern State University (3-0), Western Colorado University (3-1) and Southwest Baptist (3-1).
- The Gorillas were paced by senior outside hitter Erika Ivkov (Ward, Colo.), who posted 53 kills over the weekend. She recorded a match-high 19 kills in the Gorillas 3-1 win against Southwest Baptist. Ivkov ended the week ranked second in the MIAA in kills per set (3.79) and she posted a .244 attack percentage as PSU currently leads the MIAA in that category (.275). Ivkov also posted six service aces on the weekend and averaged 2.5 digs per set.
Scouting the Opposition
- Lubbock Christian enters their home tournament with a 2-2 record. Last weekend they were in Colorado participating in the Oredigger Volleyball Classic at Colorado School of Mines. They played three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) squads. They fell to Colorado Mesa University (3-1) and the host Orediggers (3-0) before rebounding with wins over University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (3-2) and Fresno Pacific (3-1).
- Hannah Thomas led the Chaparrals with 44 kills on 126 attempted attacks.
- Dixie State went 1-3 in their home tournament. They defeated Sranislaus State (3-1) in the third game of the 2019 Dixie State/Desert Garden Inn by Wydham Classic. They fell to St. Cloud State University (3-0), Simon Fraser University (3-0) and Northwest Nazarene University (3-0).
- Black Hills State was in Joplin, Missouri for the 2019 Holiday Inn & Comfort Suites Southern Invitational where they finished the weekend 2-2. They opened the weekend with a win over Southwestern Oklahoma State University (3-1) and finished the tourney with a win over Cameron University (3-1). In the middle, however, there were losses to Missouri Southern State University (3-0) and Wayne State College 3-0.
- Madison Hoopman finished the weekend with 42 kills, good for 3.0 per set. She had eight kills in the decisive fourth set against Cameron, totaling 22 in the victory while hitting .436.
- Haedyn Rhoades of Black HIlls State totaled 70 digs in four matches, averaging 5.0 per set.
- Texas Permian Basin is entering with a 4-0 record. They went 3-0 at the Dr. Steve Aicinena Invitational with wins over Southwest University (N.M.), (3-0), Westminster College (3-0), Texas A&M International (3-0) and Fort Lewis College (3-0).
- Travana Matthews had a pair of matches with both double digit kills and over .500 hitting percentage, breaking the school match record. The senior captain leads the LSC in hitting percentage, and was named MVP of the Dr. Aicinena Invitational tournament.
