MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team completed a three-game MIAA series sweep of Northwest Missouri State University with a 9-2 victory Sunday (Mar. 21).
The Gorillas (10-5, 7-5 MIAA) jumped out to a 6-0 lead thanks to a two-run second and four-run third inning and Pitt State never looked back against the host Bearcats (6-9, 5-7 MIAA).
Garrett McGowan, the MIAA RBIs leader, delivered a three-run double as part of the Gorillas' four-run outburst in the third frame. Adam Theis smacked in Pitt State's first two runs with a two-run single in the second inning.
Peyton Ingalla (3-0) made the early lead stand up. He allowed just one run and three hits through 5.0 innings of work, registering six strikeouts. Four Pitt State relievers – Justin Root, Bennett Scherer, Jaret Dotson and Zach Curry – allowed just one more run and four Bearcats hits over 4.0 innings of action.
Ryan Koval, Cruz Aranda and Caleb Carr all collected two hits apiece to help pace the Pitt State offensive attack. Koval tripled and scored twice in the contest.
Pitt State will travel to Edmond, Okla., next weekend (Mar. 27-28) for a three-game MIAA series against the University of Central Oklahoma.
