Gorillas, Jets Split Twinbill Saturday

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a doubleheader against Newman University Saturday (Apr. 17) at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas defeated the Jets by run-rule, 13-3, in game one before Newman claimed a 12-8 victory in the nightcap.

Pitt State (18-11, 13-10 MIAA) and Newman (6-16, 5-15 MIAA) will wrap up the three-game MIAA series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday (Apr. 18).

In game one, the Gorillas broke open a 3-2 game with three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead and Pitt State added three runs in the fifth and four apiece in the sixth and seventh frames to end the game early.

Garrett McGowan belted a two-run home run in the contest and Greyson Pinkett went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Mason Hartman and Aaron Gerdes scored three times apiece in the contest. David Henderson (6-2) scattered five hits over 6.0 innings of work to earn the win. He registered eight strikeouts.

In game two, the Gorillas fell behind 5-1 in the second inning and never were able to catch up. Newman stretched the margin to 10-2 before Pitt State's Caleb Carr belted a grand slam home run to make it a 10-6 game after five innings of play.

Carr and Cruz Aranda both had two hits for Pitt State. Nick Brown (1-2) took the loss on the mound for the Gorillas.
