Gorillas Sweep Lions On Pair of Walk-Off Wins


PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team showed a flair for the dramatic by scoring a pair of walk-of victories over Missouri Southern State University Saturday (Apr. 24) at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas defeated the Lions, 3-2 in 13 innings in game one and 4-3 in the nightcap.

Pitt State (21-11, 16-10 MIAA) and MSSU (24-9, 17-9 MIAA) will close out the three-game MIAA series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.

Caleb Carr delivered the heroics in game one with an one-out double in the bottom of the 13th inning that scored Brett Daley from first base. Ryan Koval led off the inning with a single off MSSU reliever Scott Duensing (2-2) before Daley reached on a fielder's choice while trying to advance Koval to send on a bunt. Carr jumped on the first offering from Duensing and lined a shot into right center field and Daley sped home with the winning run.

Pitt State foiled the Lions' Zach Parish's attempt to claim his ninth victory of the season by plating a run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Aaron Gerdes doubled home pinch runner Daley with the tying run. Dawson Pomeroy started the rally by reaching on an one-out error and Daley entered the game with two outs to set of Gerdes hit.

Parish limited the Gorillas to one run on four hits through 7.0 innings of work. He fanned nine Pitt State batters.

Justin Root (1-1) worked the final 1.3 innings on the mound to earn the win. David Henderson allowed two runs in 7.7 innings and Tanner Lane worked 4.0 innings of one-hit relief to give the Gorillas the chance for the victory.

In game two, Daley delivered a walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and give the Gorillas the sweep.

MSSU had plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead in the contest, before Pitt State countered with Garrett McGowan's solo homeer in the bottom of the frame to knot the score. Cruz Aranda also went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the contest
