PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team completed a three-game MIAA series sweep of No. 19 ranked Missouri Southern State University with an 8-7 victory Sunday (Apr. 25) at Al Ortolani Field.
The win served as the third straight one-run victory by the Gorillas (22-11, 17-10 MIAA) over the Lions (24-10, 17-10 MIAA) who entered the series ranked No. 19 in the most recent NCAA Division II NCBWA Top 25 poll. With the sweep, Pitt State pulled into a tie for third place in the MIAA standings with MSSU.
The Gorillas broke open a 3-2 game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and three more in the fifth inning.
Aaron Gerdes paced Pitt State's 11-hit offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBIs. Gerdes, Garrett McGowan and Dawson Pomeroy all homered in the contest for the Gorillas.
Peyton Ingalls improved to 5-1 on the season. He pitched six strong innings before running into trouble in the seventh when the Lions touched him and reliever Tanner Lane for a combined five runs to narrow an 8-2 deficit to an 8-7 margin. Pomeroy picked up his fourth save of the season by recording the final seven outs to shut the door on MSSU's comeback bid.
