Box Score TOPEKA — The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team built a 15-point third quarter lead then withstood an Oklahoma Baptist University comeback bid for a 70-66 season opening victory in the Washburn Crossover Classic Friday (Nov. 11) at Lee Arena.
Tristan Gegg paced three Pitt State players in double figures with 24 points. She made nine of 14 shots from the floor, including six 3-pointers. Her final triple came with 3:08 to play in the game and the Gorillas (1-0) clinging to a 64-63 lead.
Gegg's make pushed the Pitt State margin to four points, 67-63, and the Gorillas held off OBU down the stretch.
Freshman Harper Schreiner posted a double double in her Pitt State debut with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also posted six of the Gorillas' 22 assists in the contest.
Karenna Gerber overcame first half foul trouble to score 16 points – 14 in the second half – and grab six rebounds. She made six of eight shots from the floor in the contest.
OBU got a team leading 22 points from Jaedyn Getman.
The Gorillas will close out the two-day, classic format tournament with a 1 p.m. contest against Southwestern Oklahoma State University Saturday (Nov. 12).
