Pitt State Men Claim Sixth MIAA Indoor Title in Last Nine Years

Gorillas Score Sixth Highest Point Total in MIAA Indoor Meet History


MARYVILLE, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University men's indoor track & field team entered Championship Sunday with a lead and the Gorillas slammed the door on the competition early in the day to secure the 2022 MIAA Indoor Championships at Hughes Field House.
 
The Gorillas posted 173 points – the sixth-highest point total in MIAA Indoor Championships history – to beat MIAA runner-up University of Nebraska-Kearney by 75.5 points.
 
Throwers Konner Swenson (57-8.5) and Cole Sample (56-4.75) opened the day with second and third place finishes in the shot put and distance runners Mason Strader (4:08.01) and Connar Southard (4:08.46) followed shortly afterwards with a one-two finish in the mile run to set the tone early in the day.
 
Sprinter Braylen Brewer captured MIAA titles in the 200 meters (21.37) and 400 meters (46.33) disciplines and he helped punctuate the dominant weekend with a school record performance by the 4x400m relay in the event finale. Brewer ran the anchor leg along with teammates Sam Tudor, Nizar Alarahshun and Bailey Stone, who finished the race in 3 minutes, 9.19 seconds.
 
Brewer earned the MIAA Men's High Point Scorer honor by generating 22.5 points for the Gorillas on the weekend.
 
L.J. Kiner broke his own school record in the triple jump in capturing the MIAA crown in the discipline. He shot into first place on his sixth and final attempt, posting a mark of 52 feet, 6.75 inches.
 
Tevin Wright-Rolse secured an MIAA runner-up finish in the 60 meters (6.84). Bryce Grahn added an All-MIAA performance with a third-place finish in the 3,000 meters (8:12.99), while Alarahsun finished third in both the 200m (21.41) and the 400m (47.53).
 
The Gorillas won their second straight MIAA indoor crown and the program's sixth MIAA indoor title in the last nine years (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022). Overall, this marked Pitt State's eighth MIAA Indoor Championship since joining the conference in 1990.
