Gorillas Open Season With 6-4 Extra Inning Victory


EDMOND, Okla. — Garrett McGowan belted a solo home run to break a 4-4 tie in the top of the 10th inning and the Pittsburg State University baseball team claimed a 6-4 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State University Sunday (Feb. 6) in the season debut for both squads.

Tanner Lane recorded the final two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to save the game for the Gorillas (1-0). Dawson Pomeroy earned the victory by tossing 2.0 innings of scoreless relief work. Peyton Ingalls started the game, allowing three runs over 5.0 innings of work. He walked two batters and registered four strikeouts.

Pitt State trailed 3-0 after five innings of play, but the Gorillas plated two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to push in front, 4-3. SWOSU (0-1) knotted the score with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

McGowan went 2-for-5 with a double, HR and three RBIs in the game, while Ryan Koval went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Aaron Gerdes and Korrey Siracusa also collected two hits apiece in the contest.

The Gorillas will return to action in the Edmond First Pitch Classic Monday at 3 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist University.
