Gorillas Ride Long Ball to 12-7 Victory


EDMOND, Okla. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team swatted five home runs and scored 10 runs after the fifth inning to pull away for a 12-7 victory over Northern State University Tuesday (Feb. 8) at Wendell Simmons Field on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma.
 
Garrett McGowan went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs to lead the Pitt State offense. He belted a pair of home runs in the contest – a two-run shot in the fourth inning and a solo blast in the eighth. McGowan added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a run-scoring single in the ninth.
 
Cruz Aranda, Trey McClelland and Bret Daley each hit two-run home runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
 
Jordan Mendenhall (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing two runs in 1.3 innings of work. Tanner Lane collected his second save of the young season by recording the final six outs. He scattered four hits and fanned two batters.
 
The Gorillas wrapped up  three days of action at the Edmond First Pitch Classic with a 2-1 record. Pitt State will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., next to compete in the Henderson State University Invitational Friday and Saturday (Feb. 11-12).
