Gorillas Open Series With 6-5 Win

PITTSBURG — Caleb Carr's run-scoring groundout scored pinch runner Brett Daley with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Pittsburg State University baseball team defeated Northwest Missouri State University, 6-5, Saturday (Mar. 12) at Al Ortolani Field.

Daley scored from second base on the play, wheeling around third base and charging home ahead of first baseman Ryan Williams' throw home. Daley entered the game to run for Jordan Maxson, who drew a leadoff walk, and stole second base with one out in the inning.

The Gorillas (11-7, 6-1 MIAA) scored six runs on just four hits. Pitt State benefited from six NWMSU (5-12, 1-6 MIAA) errors in the contest. Jordan Maxson belted a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Zach Nagel (1-0) pitched 2.3 innings of one-hit relief to earn the win for the Gorillas. Jordan Mendenhall registered his first save of the season.

The Gorillas and the Bearcats will resume the three-game series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday (Mar. 13).
