PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's indoor track & field team scored 47 points and finished third overall at the 2022 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships Saturday (Mar. 12) at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
The Gorillas matched the program's second-best indoor national finish with their third-place finish. Pitt State captured the 2018 NCAA-II national title at the Robert W. Plaster Center and the Gorillas also finished third overall in 1995.
Grand Valley State University captured the national crown with 66 points. Ashland University edged Pitt State for second place with 49 points. West Texas A&M University (40) and the University of Central Missouri (29) rounded out the top five places.
Trey Mooney and Hunter Jones opened Saturday's with strong showings in the heptathlon. Mooney placed third with 5,585 points and Hunter Jones finished fourth with a personal-best 5,494 points.
Braylen Brewer finished as the national runner-up in the 400 meters (46.60) and he added an eighth-place finish in the 200 meters (21.81). Mason Strader added a fourth-place All-America finish in the mile run (4:09.01).
L.J. Kiner captured the national championship in the triple jump for the Gorillas. He broke his own school record with his winning jump of 53 feet, 2.75 inches.
The 4x400m relay of Sam Tudor, Bailey Stone, Nizar Alarahshun and Brewer closed the day with a national runner-up finish with a time of 3:10.81.
