Gorillas Down Hornets, 7-1, Wednesday


PITTSBURG —The Pittsburg State University baseball team posted a 7-1 victory over Emporia State University in MIAA action Wednesday (Mar. 16) at Glennen Field.

The Gorillas (14-7, 9-1 MIAA) posted their eighth straight victory by jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning against the Hornets (8-15, 2-8 MIAA).

Jordan Maxson, Trey McClelland and Caleb Carr all swatted home runs in the contest for Pitt State. McClelland and Mason Hartman had two hits apiece in the game, while Maxson and Carr each drove in a pair of runs.

Ben Des Rosiers (3-1) worked 1.3 hitless innings of relief behind starter Brett Wiemers to earn the win. Wiemers allowed one run and two hits in 3.7 innings of work. He issued five walks and registered three strikeouts. Peyton Ingalls, Conner Van Cleave and Jordan Mendenhall combined to work 4.0 innings of relief and allow just one hit to the Hornets.

Pitt State will return to action Friday (Mar. 18) when the Gorillas travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to open a three-game MIAA series against the RiverHawks.
