PITTSBURG -- Garrett McGowan delivered a bases clearing double off the right field wall for the game winning hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to help deliver the Pittsburg State University baseball team an 8-5 victory over Fort Hays State University Sunday (Mar. 27).
The Gorillas (18-9, 13-3 MIAA) entered the frame trailing 8-5, but Korrey SIracusa singled with one out to start the Pitt State rally. Cade Clemons drew a walk and pinch hitter Trey McClelland hit a hot shot to third base and reached on an infield single to lead the bases against FHSU reliever Mason Holton (0-1). Mason Hartman drew a walk to force in Siracusa with the tying run before McGowan delivered the go-ahead shot.
Jordan Mendenhall locked down his third save of the season by recording the final three outs in the ninth. Zach Nagel (3-0) earned the victory. He allowed a three-run home run to G Schmidt that staked the Tigers (3-25, 2-14 MIAA) to a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning. Brett Wiemers worked 5.0 effective innings, allowing three runs and registering three strikeouts.
McGowan finished the game 3-foro-4 at the plate with four RBI, while Hartman and Cruz Aranda had two hits apiece.
