Gorillas Complete Series Sweep of Griffons Saturday


PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team completed a three-game MIAA series sweep of Missouri Western State University with a doubleheader sweep of the Griffons Saturday (Mar. 5) at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas pounded out 29 hits and scored 25 runs in posting 10-4 and 15-6 victories.

In game one, the Gorillas (10-7, 5-1 MIAA) overcame a 3-2 deficit by scoring three runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to build a 9-3 margin. Cruz Aranda, Jordan Maxson and Mason Hartman had three hits each in the contest. Maxson homered and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Hartman finished 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored, while Aranda went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Peyton Ingalls (2-1) earned the win by pitching 7.0 solid innings on the mound. He scattered six hits and fanned five batters, while allowing three runs in the contest.

In the nightcap, Pitt State struck early and built an 8-1 lead after three innings, but MWSU (3-12, 1-5 MIAA) trimmed the Gorillas margin to 9-6 by scoring two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth frame. Pitt State eventually put the game out reach with a six-run eighth inning.

Garrett McGowan went 4-for-5 with a double and a three-run home run to lead the Pitt State offensive attack. Caleb Carr went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while Cade Clemons also homered and drove in a pair of runs. Pinch hitter Trey McClelland also swatted a two-run homer in the Gorillas' big eighth frame.

Ben Des Rosier (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Gorillas. He allowed just two hits in 3.3 innings behind starter Zach Curry. Paul Panduro pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Pitt State as well.
