WICHITA -- Peyton Ingalls limited the Newman University baseball team to one run over 5.2 innings of work to help lead Pittsburg State University to a 7-3 victory in the MIAA series opener between the squads Thursday (Apr. 21).
Ingalls (6-1) scattered five hits and registered eight strikeouts in the contest. Jordan Mendenhall recorded the final six outs after Bennett Scherer allowed two runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
Trey McClelland belted a three-run home run as part of a four-run first inning for the Gorillas (24-17, 18-10 MIAA). Garrett McGowan added a run-scoring double in the opening frame.
Braeden Hinton smacked a two-run home run as part of a three-run sixth inning that changed Newman (22-19, 12-16 MIAA) starter Garrett Vandeventer (5-5).
The Gorillas and Jets will resume the series with a 2 p.m. game Friday at McCarthy Field.
