WICHITA -- Righthander Paul Panduro recorded just the third no-hitter in Pittsburg State University baseball history Friday (Apr. 22) and the Gorillas offense gave him plenty of run support in a 9-0 victory over Newman University at McCarthy Field.
Panduro (1-4) threw 126 pitches and registered a school single game record with 16 strikeouts while limiting the Jets to just three baserunners -- all on walks -- over 9.0 innings pitched. The Scottsbluff, Neb., native recorded the program's first shutout since March 30, 1996, when Jeff Lohse blanked Lincoln University in a 15-0 seven-inning affair. Lohse (6.1 IP) also combined with reliever Tony Gray (0.2 IP) for the program's first no-hitter earlier that year in a 2-0 seven-inning win over Wayne State College on Feb. 17, 1996.
On Friday, Panduro retired the first seven Newman hitters -- including five by strikeout -- before issuing a one-out walk to second baseman Zack Hargrove. He sat down the next 15 batters before surrendering a two-out walk in the eighth to catcher Dalton Smith.
By then, the Pitt State offense had exploded for nine runs on 10 hits, plating four runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and three more in the fifth frame for a commanding 9-0 lead. Jordan Maxson belted a two-run home run as part of the Gorillas' fifth inning scoring. Austin Bonnel also belted a two-run homer to break a scoreless tie in the third inning.
Panduro, winless in four previous starts and 12 prior appearances on the season closed out the game by striking out first baseman Jenner Steele for the final out and the single game game record strikeout total.
Pitt State (25-17, 19-10 MIAA) and Newman (22-20, 12-17 MIAA) will wrap up the three-game MIAA series with a Noon game Saturday.
