WICHITA -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team broke loose at the plate for an eight-run eighth inning to propel the Gorillas to an 11-3 victory and a three-game series sweep of Newman University Saturday (Apr. 23) at McCarthy Field.
The Gorillas (26-17, 20-10) entered the eighth frame trailing 3-2 before the Pitt State bats exploded for eight runs on seven hits. Kaden Fowler homered to start the inning. Caleb Carr smacked a three-run homer in the frame and Jordan Maxson added a two-run blast..
Jordan Mendenhal (3-1) earned the win in relief. He allowed just one hit over 1.2 innings. Starter Tanner Lane went 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs on two hits and fanning nine batters.
Maxson, Conner Van Cleave and Austin Bonnel each had three hits in the contest.
