Pitt State Rallies to Force Deciding Game Sunday

PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit, scoring eight unanswered runs to claim an 8-4 victory over Missouri Southern State University Saturday (May 7).

The win helped the Gorillas (30-19) even the best of three quarterfinal series of the 2022 MIAA Baseball Championships against the Lions (29-22) at a game apiece and force a deciding third game Sunday (May 8) at 1 p.m. at Al Ortolani Field.

Catcher Braeden Hinton homered twice in the game, including a three-run shot in the Gorillas' four-run seventh inning. He finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBI.

Austin Bonnel also homered and scored three runs, finishing the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of walks. Garrett McGowan, Caleb Carr and Jordan Maxson all had two hits in the contest, too.

Zach Nagel (4-1) allowed just one hit and a pair of walks over 5.0 innings of relief. Starter Tanner Lane pitched 4.0 innings allowing four runs on seven hits as the Lions belted three home runs, including two by centerfielder Drew Davis.

The winner of Sunday's action will advance to the semifinals of the 2022 MIAA Championships, which will take place May 12-14 at Edmond, Okla.
