PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams returned to action with impressive efforts in the Rumble in the Jungle Invitational at the Robert W. Plaster Center Friday (Jan. 20).
The Pitt State women posted a meet high 269 points among the field of nine squads, while the Pitt State men also breezed to victory with 230 points.
The Gorillas claimed 10 individual event titles in the women's disciplines and eight more in the men's competition.
Freshman Xavier Carmichael broke the Pitt State men's indoor 60 meters record with his winning time of 6.62 seconds. He bested the previous best mark of 6.85 set by Juante Baldwin in 2018. Carmichael also posted the sixth fastest time in school history in winning the 200 meters (21.61); and he placed second in the long jump with an NCAA qualifying mark of 23 feet, 8.25 inches.
L.J. Kiner won the men's long jump with a best mark of 25-3.5, the third-best mark in school history in the discipline.
Braylen Brewer led a one-two-three Pitt State finish in the men's 400 meters. Brewer, who holds the school record at 46.33, was clocked in a fast time of 47.36 (PQ), while Sam Tudor (47.75, PQ) and Bailey Stone (48.02, PQ) finished right behind him. Tudor improved his fourth-best time in school history, while Stone registered the fifth best time in the race.
T.J. Caldwell (7.85, PQ) and Daylin Williams (7.90, PQ) breezed to a one-two finish in the men's 60 meter hurdles, while Makai Blades placed second in both the 60m (6.85, PQ) and the 200m (21.86). Diego Contreras won the men's mile run in 4:08.34, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Konner Swenson won the shot put (56-4.6) and placed second in the weight throw (57-0.25), while Cole Sample won the weight throw (58-0.5) and finished second in the shot put (56-2).
In the women's action, Jentrie Alderson posted victories in the mile run (4:59.19) and the 3,000 meters (9:56.00, PQ). Her 3,000m time was third-best in school history, while her mile time ranks fifth.
Sky Hagan posted the third-fastest time in school history in winning the women's 60 meter hurdles in 8.40 (PQ). Taniya Looney won the 60 meters in 7.60 (PQ), while Jamiya Morgan won the 200 meters in 25.12.
Blakelee Winn finished second in the 60m (7.61, PQ) and third in the 60m hurdles (8.71, PQ), while Claire Bruening placed second in the 800 meters (2:18.03).
Allary Liberatore won the high jump, tying for fifth-place all-time with a clearance of 5-7.75. Erica Schamel placed second in the discipline (5-6.5). Auna Childress won the long jump with the seventh-best mark in Pitt State history (19-0.5) and Mattie Flanagan finished second in the discipline (18-6.5, PQ).
Kyla Davis won the women's pole vault (12-8.75, PQ), Camryn Williams won the shot put (43-5.25) and Abby Lasiter claimed victory in the weight throw (50-11.5).
Octavia Duncan (50-6.25) and Williams (49-10.5) finished second and third in the weight throw, while Winn (42-11) and Lasiter placed second and third in the shot put.
Pitt State will host an NAIA/Junior College Challenge starting at 12:30 p.m. (CST) Saturday (Jan. 21).
