Gorillas Shine in Wendy’s/PSU Invitational

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams turned in another round of solid performances in the Wendy's/PSU Invitational at the Robert W. Plaster Center Saturday (Jan. 28).
 
The Pitt State women posted eight individual event titles in the meet, highlighted by Auna Childress school record-breaking effort in the triple jump. The Pitt State men claimed three individual event victories, including school record performances by T.J. Caldwell in the 60 meter hurdles and Corey Lyons in the 600 yard run.
 
Childress won the women's triple jump with a personal best mark of 42 feet, 2 inches to best per previous school record mark.
 
Caldwell turned in a lightning quick time of 7.74 seconds in the prelims of the men's 60 meter hurdles to break the old mark of 7.83 seconds he shared with Jeremy Jackson. Caldwell and Daylin Williams both ran under the previous school record time in the finals of the event. Caldwell won in 7.76, while Williams placed second in 7.77.
 
Lyons won the men's 600 yard run in a full second ahead of the previous school record of 1:11.33 of Graham Hudelson in 2022. Lyons won the race in 1:10.33.
 
In other women's action, Sky Hagan posted the second fastest time in school history in winning the 60m hurdles in 8.31. Kate Dawson won the 800 meters in 2:12.27 – the third-fastest time in school history. The women's distance medley relay of Dawson, Maddie O'Neill, Claire Bruening and Cami Roy won in a fast time of 12:21.64.
 
Erica Schamel won the high jump (5-9, PQ), Kyla Davis won the pole vault (12-8.25, PQ), Hannah Honeyman won the 3,000 meters (10:12.95) and Jentrie Alderson won the 5,000 meters (17:18.00, PQ). Allary Liberatore matched her personal best effort with a second-place clearance of 5-7.75 in the high jump.
 
In the men's action, Xavier Carmichael won the 60 meters in 6.65, just off his school record setting time of 6.62 last week. Antione Evans Jr. placed fourth in the finals of the discipline in 6.71 – the third best mark in school history.
 
Christian Carter placed second in the long jump (24-0.5, PQ), Nizar Alarahshun finished fourth in the 400 meters (47.76, PQ) and Dre'Shaun Sanders placed fifth in the 200 meters (21.62, PQ), while clocking the seventh-best time in school history. Braden Zaner finished second in the 3,000 meters (8:19.23).
 
The men's 400m relay of Sam Tudor, Sanders, Bailey Stone and Alarahshun placed second in a time of 3:12.03 (PQ).
