PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University broke open a 7-0 game with two scores in a 14-second span of the second quarter as the Gorillas pulled away for a 55-6 Homecoming victory over the University of Sioux Falls Saturday (Oct. 28).
The No. 2 ranked Gorillas improved to 9-0 on the season with the non-conference victory over the Cougars (3-6).
Running back Antwan Squire carried the ball 10 times for 96 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while running backs Cleo Chandler Jr. and Eric Virgil also added rushing scores in the contest.
Quarterbacks Chad Dodson Jr. and Ty Pennington combined to complete 15 of 20 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns. Pennington had a 33-yard touchdown pass to running back Noah Hernandez and a 10-yard scoring toss to wide receiver Kam Gillespie. Dodson added a 14-yard TD pass to tight end Devon Garrison.
Pitt State's Kolbe Katsis added a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown midway through the third quarter.
Garrison finished the game with four catches for 68 yards, while Katsis had one reception for 48 yards.
The Pitt State defense forced two turnovers and limited USF to 241 yards of total offense in the game. Linebacker Alex Gaskill posted a team-leading nine tackles, an interception and a pass breakup. Cornerback Jaylen Fuksa added three pass breakups and safety Carson Otworth added an interception.
USF's Nick Hernandez converted a pair of third quarter field goals – from 35 and 36 yards out.
Pitt State will travel to St. Joseph, Mo., next Saturday (Nov. 4) to battle MIAA rival Missouri Western State University at 1 p.m. (CDT).
