Pitt State Squads Enjoy Successful Debuts

EMPORIA, Kan. — The Pittsburg State University men's and women's outdoor track & field teams enjoyed successful season debuts at the Emporia State University Relays Saturday (Mar. 25).

The Gorillas posted a pair of individual event victories – by Christian Carter in the men's long jump and Taniya Looney in the women's 100 meters – and a score of NCAA qualifying marks.

In the men's action, Carter won the long jump with an NCAA qualifying mark of 23 feet, 10.25 inches. Caleb Calvin also placed second in the javelin with a personal-best mark of 225-5 (PQ). Konner Swenson picked up a pair of PQ marks, placing fifth in the hammer throw (188-8) and fifth in the shot put (57-3).

On the track, the 400m relay of A.J. Evans, Tevin Wright-Rose, Xavier Carmichael and Makai Blades picked up a PQ mark with their third-place time of 40.37 seconds, while the 1,600m relay of Sam Tudor, Nizar Alarahshun, Dre'shaun Sanders and Bailey Stone secured a PQ with their second place time of 3:13.25.

Diego Contreras also placed fourth in the men's 1,500 meters (3:55.57), while Tudor finished fifth in the men's 400 meters (47.88). Sanders placed sixth in the 400m (48.13), Wright-Rose finished sixth in the 100 meters (10.47) and Blades placed seventh in the 100m (10.48).

In the women's action, Looney etched her name into the Pitt State record book with her winning time of 11.34 in the 100m. She broke the former Pitt State record of 11.43 by .09. Makayla Watson placed second in the long jump (19-0) and Kyra Heald placed second in the high jump (5-5.25). Rachel Wilson finished third in the high jump (5-4.25) and Makayla Pavelka finished third in the triple jump (36-2.75).

Madison Reese secured a PQ mark with her fourth-place showing in the javelin (145-9) and Kyla Davis picked up a PQ mark with her fourth-place finish in the pole vault (12-5.5).

On the track, Kinleigh Hall placed fourth in the 400m (57-07) and Claire Bruening placed fourth in the 800m (2:16.74), while Jamiya Morgan finished fifth in the 100m (12.02). The 400m relay of Allison Brumley, Looney, Nakiya Marshall and Morgan finished second in 46.96; and the 1,600m relay of Maddie O'Neill, Hall, Morgan and Matti Price also placed second in 3:53.24.
