Gorillas Set to Open MIAA Action

PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University softball team will open its slate of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action on the road this weekend.
 
The Gorillas will travel to Warrensburg, Mo., Sunday (Mar. 12) to open MIAA play against the University of Central Missouri. Pitt State will then make the short jaunt to Jefferson City, Mo., Monday (Mar. 13) to battle Lincoln University.

Sunday's doubleheader will have a 1 p.m. (CST) start time, while Monday's action will get started at Noon. Both match-ups have been pushed back due to inclement weather.
 
Scouting the Opposition
 
  • The Blue Tigers are 3-12 on the season. LU posted a 1-3 record last weekend at the Branson (Mo.) Bash. The Blue Tigers lone win came against Maryville University (3-2) in eight innings. Most recently, LU dropped a doubleheader to McKendree University, 12-0 and 9-4.
  • The Jennies bring a 12-5 record into their weekend slate. UCM went 4-0 last weekend at the MIAA/GLVC Crossover in Pittsburg. The Jennies posted wins over Missouri S&T, Truman and Southwest Baptist in the two-day event. UCM is led by graduate student Makenzie McAtee. McAtee is hitting .419 with two home runs and 10 RBI. The Jennies add a solid one-two punch in the circle with Andy Siebeneck (3-2, 1.86 ERA) and Kaylee Diggs (3-1, 2.17 ERA).
 
Scouting the Gorillas
  • The Gorillas are 14-6 on the season and currently riding an 11-game winning streak. Pitt State also swept four games in the MIAA/GLVC Crossover last weekend, defeating Missouri S&T, Truman and Rockhurst.
  • Senior Taylor Lambert has led the Pitt State offensive attack, hitting a whopping .464 and stealing a team-leading 11 bases so sar. Freshman Heather Arnett is batting .391 with 11 stolen bases as well. Junior Paxtyn Hayes has smacked eight home runs and driven in 30 runs. Hays shares the RBI lead in the MIAA and ranks second in the conference thus far in round trippers.
  • In the circle, the Gorillas have a one-two punch in juniors Hannah Harrison and Lilli Weir. Harrison has a 6-2 record with a 1.68 ERA and 57 strikeouts. She has held opponent hitters to a .217 batting average in 53.2 innings pitche. Weir has a 7-3 record with 45 strikeouts and a 3.77 ERA of 3.77. She has limited opposing hitters to a .255 batting average in 57.1 innings pitched.
