JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University men's outdoor track & field team is the king of the hill in the MIAA once again in 2023.
The Gorillas claimed their eighth MIAA Outdoor Championship in the last 12 seasons and the program's15th all-time MIAA outdoor crown by compiling 184.5 points in the three-day meet. Missouri Southern finished as a distant MIAA runner-up with 106 points.
Pitt State made an early statement Sunday as Cordell Tinch swept MIAA titles in the high jump and the 110-meter hurdles and the 4x100m relay of Makai Blades, Xavier Carmichael, Dre'shaun Sanders and Tevin Wright-Rose raced to an MIAA crown early in the day.
Tinch clocked an amazing time of 12.97 seconds (wind aided) in winning the 110m hurdles and he broke the all-time Pitt State record with his winning clearance of 7 feet, 2 inches in the high jump. The relay quartet won their race in 39.97 seconds. L.J. Kiner added his second MIAA title of the weekend by winning the triple jump (55-1) later in the afternoon.
Carmichael scored a pair of MIAA runner-up finishes in the 100 meters (10.33) and the 200 meters (21.02), while Sam Tudor finished as the MIAA runner-up in the 400 meters (47.37). Daylin Williams (3rd, 110mH, 13.76) and Diego Contreras (3rd, 1500m, 3:49.38) also garnered All-MIAA finishes in their respective disciplines.
The 4x400m relay of Tudor, Bailey Stone, Sanders and Nizar Alarahshun finished fourth in 3:11.27, while Braden Zaner placed fourth in the 5,000m (15:18.24) and Konner Swenson finished fourth in the shot put (55-5). T.J. Caldwell (110mH, 13.83), Sanders (200m, 21.15) and Cole Sample (shot put, 55-1) all added fifth place finishes.
E'Lan Moore (163-6), Swenson (162-8) and Michael Marinakis (154-10) placed sixth, seventh and eighth in the discus, while Matthew Oglesby added a seventh-place showing in the 5,000m (15:30.58) and Will Ellis finished seventh in the triple jump (46-1.5).
