Gorillas Hit Marks in Wendy's/PSU Invitational

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams enjoyed a solid day of competition in the Wendy's/PSU Invitational Saturday (Jan. 27) at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
 
The Pitt State men claimed three individual event wins and secured 13 NCAA qualifying marks on the day, while the Pitt State women scored top honors in seven disciplines and registered 21 NCAA qualifying marks.
 
Mason Strader led a dominant showing in the mile run. Strader won the event in 4 minutes, 5.22 seconds. Teammates Matthew Oglesby (4:08.79) and Dylan Sprecker (4:10.66) finished second and third, respectively.
 
Newcomer Tre Betts won the triple jump with a leap of 50 feet, 0.75 inches, posting the fourth-best mark in school history, and freshman Grayson Smith won the pole vault by securing the second-best mark in Pitt State history (17-1.75, PQ).
 
Daylin Williams (7.84, PQ) and Joel Nyatusah (7.95, PQ) placed second and fourth in the 60m hurdles, while Dakari Charlton (6.65, PQ) and Dapriest Hogans (6.66, PQ) finished third and fourth in the 60 meters. Hogans also placed fourth in the 200 meters (21.45, PQ). Charlton's time ties for the second-fastest in school history.

Cole Sample registered a nearly eight-inch personal best with his third-place toss of 57-9.75 (PQ) in the shot put.
 
Braden Zaner also finished second in the 5,000 meters (14:47.48), while Hunter Jones (high jump, 6-11.5, PQ), Aden Baughman (800m, 1:53.13) and the 4x400 relay of Nate Wilson, Bailey Stone, Woyn Chatman and Caden Williams (3:11.68, PQ) all posted third-place finishes. Williams also finished fourth in the 400 meters (47.95, PQ).
 
The distance medley relay of Zaner, Riley Hedges, Camron Jeffeson and Oglesby wrapped the day with a second-place time of 10:11.70.

Taniya Looney led the Pitt State women with a pair of victories in the 60 meters (7.40, PQ) and the 200 meters (24.44, PQ). She matched her school record in the 60m with her fast time in the short sprint.
 
Blakelee Winn won also won the long jump (19-0.25, PQ); Hannah Gibson won the 5,000 meters (17:29.72); Allary Liberatore won the high jump (5-7.75, PQ; Kate Dawson won the 800 meters (2:11.02, PQ); and the distance medley relay of Gibson, Kelsey Bruening, Hailey Secrest and Dawson posted a winning time of 12:07.04. Dawson's 800m time was the second-fastest in school history in the discipline.
 
Other notable performances Saturday included Kyla Davis' second-place finish in the pole vault (13-11, PQ), Diandrenique Gaines second-place effort in the 60m (7.42, PQ), Taylor Nelloms second-place showing in the high jump (5-6.5, PQ) and Marissa Dick's second-place finish in the 5,000m (17:36.45). Mattie Flanagan placed third in the long jump (18-9.25, PQ) and Haleigh Hadley finished third in the high jump (5-6.5, PQ).
 
The 4x400m relay of Winn, Flanagan, Madie O'Neill and Madelyn Marquez also placed third in 3:46.78 (PQ).
