No. 8 Gorillas Utilize Big Quarters In Win Over Mavericks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team claimed a 95-81 win over Colorado Mesa to end the NSU Holiday Invitational at Rick Case Arena on Friday (Dec. 20).

For the Gorillas (10-2) it was a collective effort behind five double figure scorers and two facilitating guards. Pitt Sttate as a team finished the game going 34-of-59 from the field for .576 and were 8-of-15 from three-point attempts for .533, while claiming the rebound battle 38-26, points in the paint battle 48-40 and dished out a season-high 27 assists.

Macie Mays led the way with 21 points going 9-of-13 from the field, Grace Pyle went for 17 points with two made three-pointers, Krenna Gerber finished with 16 points, Sydney Holmes had 15 points going 4-of-6 from the field including being 3-of-4 from three-pointers while Savannah Campbell finished with 10 points, going 5-of-6 from the field. Maycee James stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high 11 rebounds, nine points and seven assists as Harper Schreiner also poured in a game-high nine assists with seven points.

Colorado Mesa (7-4) was led by Olivia Reed with a school record 45 points and six rebounds.

CMU claimed a 21-12 lead after the first quarter, with Reed accounting for 11 points for the Mavericks. In the second quarter the Gorillas scored 36 points to take a 47-44 lead into the half behind a 13 point quarter from Holmes off the bench.

The third quarter would see the Gorillas maintain a lead and go into the fourth quarter up 73-61 with 13 points from Mays in the third. Putting the game to rest in the fourth quarter, Gerber and James combined for seven points to lead the Gorillas in the final frame to the 95-81 win to close out the 2024 slate.

Pittsburg State will play host to MIAA newcomer Arkansas-Fort Smith in the first game of 2025 on Thursday (Jan. 2), tipoff from John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court is set for 5:30 p.m. (CST).
