TOPEKA — The Washburn University baseball team capitalized from a four-run fourth inning to claim an 8-4 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Feb. 24) at Falley Field.
The Gorillas and Ichabods have split the first two games of the three-game MIAA series and will face one another in the series finale at 1 p.m. (CST) Sunday (Feb. 25).
Payton McHarg belted a grandslam homerun off Pitt State reliever Christian Spitz in the bottom of the fourth to stake WU ( ) to a 6-1 lead. Pitt State starter Alex Kafka (1-1) exited the game one batter before Mcharg's plate appearance. Kafka allowed four runs and five hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Austin Warkins had an RBI double and a run-scoring grounder for the Gorillas (10-4, 1-1 MIAA). Blake Mozley had a pair of hits and scored two runs.
