PITTSBURG - The 16th ranked Pittsburg State softball team ended the opening weekend of conference games with a sweep over Lincoln University on Sunday (Mar. 10) at the Gene Bicknell Sports Complex for wins number 1,299 and 1,300 in program history.

Pittsburg State (24-2, 4-0 MIAA) won the first game against Lincoln (7-11, 0-4 MIAA) by a score of 3-0 in seven innings and game two 13-1 in a run-rule five innings.

In game one, Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) picked up her ninth win of the season, finishing with a complete game with 14 strikeouts. On offense, the Gorillas were led by Heather Arnett (Pittsburg, Kan.) and Hannah Burnett (Independence, Kan.), who went 2-of-3 at the top of the order and scored a run. Maddie Fernandez (San Antonio, Texas) collected two RBI on a single in the fourth inning which was responsible for the first runs of the game.

Game two saw the Gorillas score three runs in the first inning, five in the second and four more in the third en route to the 13-1 run rule victory. Arnett finished a home run short of hitting for the cycle, scoring three runs and collecting three RBI. Burnett was joined by Paxtyn Hayes (Greenwood, Ark.) and Sophia Driver (Council Bluffs, Iowa) with two RBI in the game, with the trio also coming away with two hits each. Kiana Pogroszewski picked up her seventh win of the season with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.

Up next for Pitt State will be the MIAA/NSIC Conference Challenge in Pittsburg from Friday (Mar. 15) through Sunday (Mar. 17). During the tournament, PSU is scheduled to play doubleheaders against Winona State, Augustana (S.D.) and Concordia-St. Paul.

Notes: The 24-2 start is the best record in program history through 26 games, besting the 23-3 start of the 1993 season.

Paxtyn Hayes moved into sixth for career home runs at Pittsburg State with 35 during the weekend and her RBI tally of 154 is the fifth-best among program ranks.

Heather Arnett is now tied for third in season stolen bases with 26 matching her tally from last season while her 52 career stolen bases ranks her fifth.
