PITTSBURG - The 13th ranked Pittsburg State softball team picked up extra inning wins over Winona State on Friday (Mar. 15) to begin the MIAA/NSIC Conference Challenge at the PSU Softball Complex.
Pitt State (26-2) began the day with a 5-4 win over Winona State (16-6) in eight innings. The Gorillas got the walk-off from a bases loaded hit-by-pitch by Courtney Storey (Rogers, Ark.) to cap off a three-run eighth. Storey and Heather Arnett (Pittsburg, Kan.) finished the game with an RBI, while Arnett scored twice to lead the team. Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) got the no-decision after striking out two in 6.1 innings of work, with Chelsea Beville (Seneca, Mo.) picking up the win after 1.2 innings of relief.
In game two, Pittsburg State won 6-5 over the Warriors in eight innings after a two-run eighth. Sydney Sneed (Bentonville, Ark.) hit an RBI single up the middle to score Gabby Schultz (Gardner, Kan.), followed by the walk-off RBI single up the middle by Sophia Driver (Council Bluffs, Iowa) to score Storey from second. Kiana Pogroszewski (Ephraim, Utah) struck out three in five innings for the no-decision as Beville picked up her fourth win of the season, striking out three in 2.2 innings of relief.
Up next for the Gorillas will be Augustana (S.D.) for a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m. (CT) from the PSU Softball Complex on Saturday.
