TOPEKA, Kan. - The ninth ranked Pittsburg State University softball team picked up a road doubleheader sweep over No. 23 Washburn University (3-0, 6-2) at Gahnstrom Field on Friday (Apr. 12).
Pittsburg State (40-4. 14-2 MIAA) becomes the first softball team in all NCAA divisions to accomplish a 40-win season and marks the first time in program history to eclipse 40 wins since 2017, the fifth time overall.Â
In game one, a 3-0 win, Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) pitched another gem for her 14th win of the season with eight strikeouts in a complete game shutout. Sydney Sneed (Bentonville, Ark.) led the team with two RBI from a pinch hit in the seventh inning while Maddie Fernandez (San Antonio, Texas) finished 2-of-3 with an RBI.
Game two was a 6-2 affair in favor of the Gorillas. Kiana Pogroszewski (Ephraim, Utah) picked up her 13th win of the season while striking out four in a complete game effort. Washburn (34-12, 15-7 MIAA) made it a one-run game in the sixth, 3-2 before a three-run seventh by Pitt State ensured the sweep. Hannah Burnett (Independence, Kan.), Fernandez, Kadyn Trochim (Waco, Texas) and Amaya Snyder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) collected an RBI each in the game.Â
Up next for Pittsburg State is Emporia State from the Trusler Sports Complex on Saturday (Apr. 13). The first pitch of the twin bill is set for Noon.
