Emporia, Kan. - The ninth ranked Pittsburg State University softball team extended their winning streak to 10 games following a pair of run rule victories against Emporia State University (13-3, 11-3) at the Trusler Sports Complex on Saturday (Apr. 13).
The sweep over the Hornets (28-19, 12-12 MIAA) was highlighted by senior utility player Paxtyn Hayes (Greenwood, Ark.) breaking the program record for career RBI with 183, passing Nicole Nease (2014-17).
Game one, a 13-3 victory in six innings for the Gorillas (42-4, 16-2 MIAA), highlighted by three run innings in the second and third before a six run sixth induced the run rule against ESU.Â
Heather Arnett (Pittsburg, Kan.) finished 3-of-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases, while Hannah Burnett (Independence, Kan.) also went 3-of-4 from the plate but for two RBI and one stolen base. Sydney Sneed (Bentonville, Ark.) and Gabby Schultz (Gardner, Kan.) tied with Burnett for the team lead with two RBI each in game one. Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) picked up her 15th win of the season, striking out four in five innings of work with Hannah Martin (Moore, Okla.) striking out one in the sixth inning in the circle.
In game two, an 11-3 five inning win for Pitt State, the Gorillas scored two runs in the first and second innings before a seven run fourth invoked the run rule. Hayes led the way going 4-of-4 for five RBI and two runs scored with her 11th home run of the season, falling a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. In the circle, Kiana Pogroszewski (Ephraim, Utah) picked up her 14th win of the season striking out four batters in four innings of work as Chelsea Beville (Seneca, Mo.) fanned two in her lone inning of action.
The Pitt State softball team will finish up the road portion of the MIAA schedule next weekend with doubleheaders against Northwest Missouri State University on Friday (Apr. 19) and Missouri Western State University on Saturday (Apr. 20).
