PITTSBURG - The ninth ranked Pittsburg State University softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep against the Newman University Jets on Wednesday (Apr. 24) at the PSU Softball Complex to position themselves atop the MIAA standings.
The Gorillas (47-5, 21-3 MIAA) defeated the Jets (20-32, 6-18 MIAA) in game one, 6-1 and in game two, 3-1.
In game one, a pair of three run innings in the fourth and sixth propelled Pitt State to the victory. Maddie Fernandez (San Antonio, Texas) launched her 11th home run of the season and led the team with three RBI. Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) picked up her 17th win of the season with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings as Lilli Weir (Oak Grove, Mo.) pitched the seventh, striking out two Jets and inducing a flyout.
For game two, the Gorillas scored all the runs they needed to win the game in the first inning as a Courtney Storey (Rogers, Ark.) two RBI single through the right side and later scoring on a wild pitch was more than enough to steady the Jets. Kiana Pogroszewski (Ephraim, Utah) picked up her 16th win of the season with eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings while Hannah Martin (Moore, Okla.) and Chelsea Beville (Seneca, Mo.) combined to pitch the seventh.
Up next for the ninth ranked Pittsburg State University will be a matchup with the fifth ranked University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos on Saturday (Apr. 27) at the PSU Softball Complex in a pivotal matchup in the MIAA and central region standings beginning at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
