PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University softball team swept its way to a program record for victories and the school's second MIAA Regular Season Championship Saturday (Apr. 27) at the PSU Softball Complex.
The ninth-ranked Gorillas swept a conference doubleheader from No. 5 University of Central Oklahoma, posting 10-2 and 5-2 win over the Bronchos.
Pitt State wraps up the regular season slate with a 49-5 overall record and a 23-3 mark in MIAA play. The Gorillas share the MIAA regular season crown with No. 12 Rogers State (40-10, 23-3 MIAA). UCO finished the regular season 41-11 (21-5 MIAA).
Pitt State established a new record for single-season victories with its 49th win in game two. The Gorillas' previous best mark was a 48-15 campaign in 1994.
Head coach Jenny Fuller recorded her 100th career victory at Pitt State in the game one run-rule victory. She became the fastest coach in school history to reach 100 wins, doing so in her 152nd career game for the Gorillas.
To begin the day, the Gorillas were led by Heather Arnett (Pittsburg, Kan.) with her second home run of the season and three RBI on offense as Ava Laurent (Grand Island, Neb.) struck out six in four innings for her 19th win of the season in the circle.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Pittsburg State was led by Arnett on offense again with two RBI in the sixth inning to extend the lead in the record breaking victory. Kiana Pogroszewski (Ephraim, Utah) picked up her 17th win of the season striking out three in 4.2 innings of work and Chelsea Beville (Seneca, Mo.) earned her fifth save of the season striking out three in 2.1 innings.
Up next, the Gorillas will travel to Edmond, Okla., to compete in the 2024 MIAA Championships.
