Gorillas Rumble to Victories Friday

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men's and women's indoor track & field teams both rolled to victories at the Rumble in the Jungle Invitational Friday (Jan. 24) at the Robert W. Plaster Center.

The Pitt State men compiled 188.5 points and scored eight individual event victories while besting the field by 120 points in the competition. Washburn University placed second overall with 68.5 points.

The Gorillas women registered 174 points and eight event wins on the day to secure a 67-point win in the team standings. Oklahoma Baptist University finished second with 107 points.

Cole Sample registered victories in the weight throw (60-10, PQ) and the shot put (54-7) for the Gorillas men.Daylin Williams won the 60-meter hurdles (7.91, PQ); A.J. Evans won the 60 meters (6.64, PQ); Nate Watson won the 400 meters (47.02, PQ); Mason Strader won the 800 meters (1:50.43); Dapriest Hogans won the 200 meters (21.09); and Johnetheon Lockett won the triple jump (49-3.25, PQ).

Second place showings included Jack Haukap in the weight throw (59-9, PQ); Tyrone Jackson in the 60m hurdles (7.93, PQ); Hogans in the 60m (6.68, PQ); Dylan Sprecker in the 800m (1:50.46); and Caden Williams in the 400m (47.56, PQ).

Kate Strader punctuated the Pitt State women's individual wins by setting a new school record with her winning time of 4:52.31 in the mile run. Erica Schamel also won the high jump (5-9.25, PQ); Isabelle Peters won the pole vault (13-8.25, PQ); Kayvon Nubine won the 60m hurdles (8.39, PQ); Taniya Looney won the 60m (7.55) and 200m (24.79); Auna Childress won the triple jump (40-9.75); and the 4x400m relay of Diandrenique Gaines, Kinleigh Hall, Olivia Lowrey and Jamiya Morgan won their race in 3:45.72.

Madelyn Marquez placed second in the 60m hurdles (8.44, PQ); Gaines finished second in the 60m (7.55, PQ); Lowrey placed second in the 400m (56.32, PQ); and Lily Brown finished second in the triple jump (40-1.5, PQ).

Additionally, Haleigh Hadley placed third in the high jump (5-7, PQ) and Kyla Davis finished third in the pole vault (13-4.75, PQ).
