PITTSBURG - For the first time in program history, the Pittsburg State University women's soccer team will play in the NCAA Division II national tournament, beginning on Friday (Nov. 21).Â
In only the second year as a program, the Gorillas claimed the MIAA regular season title and will now play in the Division II national tournament beginning in Bemidji, Minn. Pittsburg State was named the No. 6 seed in the Central Region and will play against the No. 3 seed, the St. Cloud State University Huskies. Kickoff for the match from Chet Anderson Stadium will be announced at a later time.
The MIAA regular season champions after going 9-1-2 against conference foes, Pittsburg State which received an at-large bid to the national tournament is 14-3-2 on the season. Friday will mark the first time in program history to play in the state of Minnesota and will also serve as the first neutral site game in team history.
St. Cloud State finished the regular season tied for second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference before advancing to the NSIC Tournament Championship match, falling to Minnesota State - Mankato 2-1 in 2OT on Sunday (Nov. 15). SCSU earned an at-large bid and will be making its third straight appearance in the national tournament with a 14-2-5 overall record.
The winner of the Pitt State - St. Cloud State match will advance to the Central Region second round and play either No. 2 seed Bemidji State (14-2-4) or No. 7 seed Central Missouri (10-5-4).
In the other half of the regional bracket, No. 1 seed Minnesota State - Mankato (17-1-3) will host Harding (12-6-2) at The Pitch, while No. 4 seed Washburn (11-3-5) will face off against No. 5 seed Missouri Western (12-2-7).
