PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and rode the early momentum to a 16-6 run-rule victory over Northwest Missouri State University Sunday (Mar. 16) at Al Ortolani Field.
The win gave Pitt State (16-5, 7-5 MIAA) a three-game MIAA series sweep of NWMSU (9-12, 3-6 MIAA) after the Gorillas swept a twinbill against the Bearcats Saturday.
Nixon Brannon went 3-for-5 at the plate with a team-leading five RBI in the contest.
Drew Bugner also went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Rickey Sanchez doubled, walked three times and scored four runs.
Braxton Haywood (1-0) limited NWMSU to a pair of hits in 3.2 scoreless innings of relief work to earn the victory. Starter
Tanner Leslie allowed six runs, four earned, in 4.1 innings pitched.
The Gorillas will return to action Tuesday (Mar. 18) by hosting Southwest Baptist University in a non-conference match-up at 5 p.m. (CDT).
