Gorillas Deliver Jaw Dropping Comeback, Beat Ichabods, 17-16

PITTSBURG -- Jake Skaggs delivered a two-out, two-run bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap an improbable comeback for the No. 19 ranked Pittsburg State University baseball team in a 17-16 victory over Washburn University Friday (Apr. 18).

The Gorillas rallied from deficits of 9-0 and 16-9 to upend the Ichabods with a five-run ninth inning. The victory helped Pitt State (33-8, 21-8 MIAA) take two of three games in the MIAA series and salvage a twinbill split Friday after WU claimed a 9-6 win earlier in the day.

Skaggs, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in left field in the top of the 9th inning, was mired in an 0-for-17 hitting slump before driving Ethan Alexander's (0-3) one-two pitch into right field to plate Nixon Brannan with the tying run and Kadyn Williams with the winning run in the three-hour, 29-minute marathon contest.

Drew Bugner, who extended his consecutive games hitting streak to 20 in the contest, started the ninth inning rally with an RBI single that plated Alex Rodgers, who led off the frame by being hit by pitch. Rickey Sanchez doubled Rodgers to third before Bugner's hit. Alexander then struck out Dagen Brewer and Hayden Dyer, but followed that with three straight walks to Brannan, Williams and Branson to set up Skaggs' heroics.

Brewer hit a pair of home runs in the contest, and three round trippers on the day, to tie the Pitt State single season record with 18. Sanchez doubled twice while going 5-for-6 at the plate. Rodgers and Branson also smacked homers in the game.

Cooper Crouch (3-1), the last of eight Pitt State pitchers to throw in the game, retired the Ichabods (22-23, 15-17 MIAA) in order in the top of the ninth to earn the victory.

The Gorillas led 4-3 in game one before the Ichabods scored three runs in the top of the sixth to push in front. Brewer and Connor Allen each homered in the game. The loss snapped Pitt State's school record 14-game winning streak.

Pitt State will travel to Joplin, Mo., Tuesday for an MIAA midweek match-up against Missouri Southern State University.
