10 Gorillas Earn All-MIAA Baseball Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ten members of the Pittsburg State University baseball team have earned All-MIAA honors today (May 6) following a vote of the conference head coaches.
 
Five Gorillas – graduate starting pitchers Kolby Dougan and Maddox Thornton, junior first baseman Dagen Brewer, graduate outfielder Alex Rodgers and junior utility player Drew Bugner – earned first-team All-MIAA honors; and Dougan was selected the Co-Pitcher of the Year.

Senior starting pitcher Tanner Leslie, senior shortstop Rickey Sanchez and senior third baseman Hayden Dyer garnered third-team All-MIAA accolades, while senior relief pitcher Cayden Castellanos and junior relief pitcher Cooper Crouch received honorable mention All-MIAA recognition.

Sanchez and Rodgers also were voted to the MIAA Gold Glove Team.

Dougan (Topeka) has posted a 7-0 record with an MIAA low 2.03 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 62.0 innings pitched this season. Dougan leads NCAA Division II in strikeouts (14.81 Ks/9 IP) and he ranks second nationally in WHIP (0.77).

Thornton (Bentonville, Ark.) has crafted a 9-1 record with a 3.14 ERA in 13 starts on the season. Thornton shares the MIAA lead in victories and ranks fifth in the league in ERA.

Brewer (Topeka) is batting .371 with 17 doubles, 20 home runs and 68 RBI to date. He ranks second in the MIAA in RBI and tied for second in the conference in home runs.

Rodgers (Omaha, Neb.) is hitting .386 with an MIAA leading 74 runs scored, nine doubles, six triples, four home runs and 29 stolen bases. He leads the MIAA in runs scored and stolen bases. Rodgers has made just two errors in 99 total chances to post a .980 fielding percentage.

Bugner (Wichita) carries a .393 batting average with 13 doubles, four home runs and 44 RBI. He ranks second in the MIAA in average and enjoyed a 21-game hitting streak earlier this season.

Leslie (Haysville, Kan.) had made 13 starts with a 6-2 record and a 4.39 ERA. He has 41 strikeouts in 65.2 innings pitched.

Sanchez (Mexico City) is hitting .380 with 51 runs scored, 19 doubles and 44 RBI. He is tied for second in the MIAA in doubles and ranks fifth in the league in batting average. Sanchez has made just three errors in 174 total chances, carrying a .983 fielding percentage.

Dyer (Gardner, Kan.) is batting .336 with 39 runs scored, 15 doubles, four home runs and 32 RBI in 42 games played.

Castellanos (Murrieta, Calif.) has made a team-leading 19 appearances, including four starts. He has a 3-2 record with a 3.70 ERA and he has a 37:7 strikeout:walk ration in 48.2 innings pitched.

Crouch (Webb City, Mo.) has made 19 relief appearances with a 4-2 record, a 4.63 ERA and four saves to date. He ranks second in the MIAA in saves.
