TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team picked up a hard fought 67-58 win over the Northeastern State University RiverHawks on Saturday (Jan. 3) at the NSU Event Center to end the first weekend of 2026.
Pittsburg State (11-2, 4-0 MIAA) as a team converted on .931 (27-of-29) free throws in the game and shot .409 (18-of-44) from the field.
Marin Adams finished with a game-high 20 points as
Harper Schreiner collected her 11th career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Northeastern State (10-3, 2-2 MIAA) shot .864 as a team from the charity stripe (19-of-22), .339 from the field (19-of-56) and made one three pointer from 11 attempts (.091). Gabrielle Tilley led the RiverHawks from the bench with 17 points with McKenzie Smith (14) and Annaston Brown (11) the other members of the team to finish with double figure scoring totals.
NSU claimed the opening 10 minutes with a 19-9 advantage, at one point claiming an 11 point lead over Pitt State (17-6). The Gorillas responded with a 21 point second quarter, fueled by a 16-4 run that saw the visitors claim a one point lead (30-29) with 1:30 remaining in the half. Northeastern State reclaimed the lead on their final possession of the half and went into the intermission up 32-30.
In the third quarter, Pittsburg State jumped out to a six point lead early (38-32, 8:01) before a 12-1 run by the hosts gave them a 44-39 advantage on the scoreboard with 3:21 remaining. NSU ended the quarter up 50-47 with the teams scoring the bulk of their points from the free throw line in the final three minutes of the third.
The fourth quarter would see the Gorillas take a 53-52 lead thanks to a Schreiner steal and score with 7:54 remaining in the game and never look back, with Adams scoring 11 of her 20 points in the final quarter of the game.
Up next for the Gorillas will be a short trip to Joplin, Mo., to play the Missouri Southern State University Lions on Tuesday (Jan. 6) from the Robert Ellis Young Gym at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
