PITTSBURG, Kan. -- PSU heads to Sin City for two games in the Las Vegas Challenge hosted by Dixie State. The Gorillas will take on Academy of Art-San Francisco on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before turning their attention to Dixie State on Wednesday. Tip-off against Dixie State is slated for 6 p.m.
Scouting Academy of Art-San Francisco
Academy of Art is 7-2 on the year. The Urban Knights opened the season 4-0 before falling to Northwest Nazarene 62-66. One of the teams first wins came against MIAA newcomer Nebraska Kearney, 72-62. In their most recent action AASF defeated Holy Names 94-89 on Saturday (Dec. 8).
The team is averaging 77.2 ppg while holding their opponents to 67.6 ppg. The Urban Knights are shooting .371 (252-of-679) from the field, including .243 (43-177) from beyond the arc. Academy of Art is shooting .664 (148-223) from the charity stripe as well. On average their opponents outrebound them 43.7-44.4 per game. They force their competition into 28.7 turnovers per game while only committing 16.9 turnovers themselves per contest.
Ariel Dale is leading four Urban Knights averaging in double digits. The senior forward is averaging 14.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest. Senior guard, Jordan Rogers is right behind her averaging 13.8 points and 6.0 rebounds so far this season. Freshman guard, Sha’Nice Storey and senior forward, Katy Wade, round out the balanced offensive attack averaging 10.2 ppg, respectively. Wade is also the Urban Knight’s leading rebounder, pulling down 9.8 rpg.
Scouting Dixie State
Dixie State has won four straight games after starting their 2013 campaign 1-3 heading into their Saturday matchup against Point Loma Nazarene. The Red Storm’s four wins have came against Colorado State-Pueblo (67-61), Hawaii-Hilo (85-75), Chaminade (86-56) and Fresno Pacific (87-64).
The team is shooting .431 (225-522) from the field, .299 (35-117) from three point range and .722 (130-180) from the free throw line. The Lions average 66.8 ppg while surrendering 71.8 ppg to their opponents. The team out rebounds their competition 46.0-37.6 rpg.
The Red Storm’s leading scorer and rebounder is Johnna Brown. The junior forward is currently averaging 13.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per contest. Kaylah Miller, sophomore guard, adds 12.4 points per game while shooting .430 (37-86) from the field. Erica Hayes is the only other player averaging in double figures. The senior guard adds 10.4 ppg while mostly coming off the bench. Mandy Munns, senior center, contributes 9.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest for Dixie State.
Scouting Pittsburg State
Pitt State opened is 6-2 on the season and 1-1 in MIAA play. The team opened conference play before the finals break, falling in the MIAA opener to Central Oklahoma at home and then traveled to Lindenwood, where the team earned its first conference win.
PSU has averaged 73.9 points and 39.9 rebounds per game in their first eight games. The team is shooting .449 overall and .313 from three point range. The team has hit 73 percent of its shots from the charity stripe. PSU’s defense has been able to hold its opponents to 57.5 ppg and 34.5 rebounds per game. The Gorillas have forced their competition into 143 turnovers while only committing 111 so far this season.
Lizzy Jeronimus has opened her sophomore campaign averaging 19.6 points and 5.9 rebounds. She is also leads the team with 21 assists. In the last outing Jeronimus scored 20 points in the second half. Morgan Westhoff is second on the team in scoring while coming off the bench. She is adding 9.4 points per game, as she hit 27-of-59 shots from the floor overall and is 14-for-32 from three-point range. Against Lindenwood, Westhoff scored the first nine-points of the game on 3-for-3 shooting from long range. Lauren Brown is averaging 7.9 ppg and leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game. She and Kylie Gafford share the team lead in blocked shots with 12. Brown is shooting .551 (27-of-49) from the field. Drew Roberts is averaging 7.6 points. Hailey Roderique recorded her first double-double against Lindenwood and leads the Gorillas in steals with 11.
PSU vs. Academy of Art-San Fransisco
Pitt State has only played Academy of Art one other time. The Gorillas fell to the Urban Knights, 67-71 on Nov. 28, 2009 in a post-Thanksgiving tournament at Dixie State. Drew Roberts and Lauren Brown were freshmen on that team. Roberts was the team’s third-leading scorer in the game with 12 points, as she was 4-for-10 from three-point range.
PSU vs. Dixie State
The Gorillas are also 0-1 against Dixie State, with Pitt State’s 84-85 loss coming in Dixie State’s post-Thanksgiving Tournament on November 27, 2009 in Saint George, Utah. Roberts, as a freshman, was one of four Pitt State players in double figures in the game with 10 points.

The Gorillas open 2013 with a 5:30 p.m. game against Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday, January 3 and follow that with the Gold Rush game against Northwest Missouri at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 5.
