BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Neither the threat of storms nor the Bearcats could hold off the Pitt State Softball team on Friday (April 13) evening as the Gorillas swept a doubleheader with Southwest Baptist, 1-0 and 6-3, in Bolivar. PSU is now 10-4 in MIAA play and 26-21 overall.
Pitt State hit two home runs in game two, including Tiffany Brown’s record-setting 14th home run of the season. In the fifth inning, Mannie DeCastro hit her 13th of the season, tying the then school record. Brown hit hers to lead off the top of the seventh, moving one ahead of DeCastro and Emily Gastineau’s record set in 2004.
The Gorillas added eight other hits in addition to the home runs in game two, while SBU tallied seven total hits. The Bearcats also had three errors.
Neither team scored until the fourth inning, when the Gorillas plated two runs in the top of the frame. DeCastro drew a leadoff walk, her second walk of the game. She moved to second on a Brown sacrifice bunt and scored on a Kreslee Ketcham base hit. Ketcham advanced to second and third on errors before crossing the plate on a Devon McCreath base hit.
DeCastro’s home run in the fifth put Pitt State up 3-0 before SBU closed the gap to 3-2 on two hits and two sac flies in the bottom of the inning.
The Gorillas added two more runs in the sixth. Kayla Sears and Molly Stiens started the inning with back-to-back doubles with Stiens double scoring Bailey Marcotte who was running for Sears. A base hit by Brenna George scored Stiens to put Pitt State up 5-2.
PSU scored its final run on Brown’s record-breaking home run in the top of the seventh.
The Bearcats were able to plate a run on two hits in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 6-3.
Cheslyn Mitchell pitched the first five innings for the Gorillas to move her record to 5-2 on the season. Jessica Barnes came in to finish the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Pitt State had five hits in game one, but was not able to push its game winning run across until the top of the seventh inning. With one out in the inning, Kreslee Ketcham earned a base hit. She moved to third on a double by Kayla Sears and came home on an error by the Bearcats.
Cheslyn Mitchell had two of the remaining three hits for the Gorillas and Mannie DeCastro also added a hit.
Hilary Erbert gave up only three hits in the complete game win for the Gorillas. She walked only one batter and struck out five. She only allowed seven base runners in the game and not one moved beyond second base.
The Gorillas travel to Warrensburg, Mo. to take on the Jennies in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday (April 14).
