Softball Finishes Saint Leo Tournament 2-2

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- After starting the first day of the Saint Leo Tournament with a split, the Gorilla softball team added another split on the second day of the tournament, earning a 6-1 win over Tarleton State before falling 7-0 to No. 8 Tampa.

Riley Campbell led the Gorilla offense agaisnt Tarleton with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Katelyn Birchfield and Kreslee Ketcham each went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Ketcham had one RBI and Birchfield two. Brenna George had only one hit in the game, but got on base three times and scored three runs. 

Kylie Harpst earned the complete game win in the circle. She gave up only two hits in the game, both in the first inning. After the first inning, Tarleton did not get another runner on base until the fourth when runners reached on an error and a fielder's choice. Another reached on a second Gorilla error in the sixth. Harpst walked no one and struck out two. 

Tarleton State's only run in the game came off a two out solo home run in the top of the first. 

Pitt State quickly answered in the bottom of the first. George started the Gorilla offense with a bunt single. With two outs Ketcham added a base hit. Birchfield cleared the bases with a double to left center. Kayla Sears added another base hit to bring home Birchfield for a 3-1 PItt State lead.

George led off again in the Gorilla half of the second and this time reached and advanced to second on an error by the Tarleton left fielder. She then moved on to third on the second TexAnn error of the inning. Tiffany Brown walked to put runners at first and third and Ketchams second hit of the day brought home George to put Pitt State up 4-1.

Pitt State scored its final two runs in the third inning. Campbell led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. George walked and Mitchell cleared the bases with a double to left center for the final 6-1 score. 

Pitt State had three more hits in the reminaing three innings for a total of 11 in the game. 

Against No. 8 Tampa, the Pitt State offense got only three hits, one each from the first three players in the lineup, George, Mitchell and Brown. George reached base in every plate appearance as she was also hit by a pitch and walked.

Tmpa scored three runs in the second on four hits and an error. Two extra base hits and an error added two more runs in the fourth, while two walks and two hits brought home two more runs for the Spartans in the fifth.

Haleign Sills pitched only 1.2 innings in the loss for Pitt State, as she gave up the first three runs, none of which were earned. Kyndel Shelburn threw 3.1 innings and gave up the remaining four runs. She struck out five batters. Samantha Grove pitched the final inning for Pitt State.

The Gorillas will not play again until March when they will go to Joplin for the Terri Mathes Zenner Memorial Tournament on March 1 and 2.
