Softball Stays Home for Spring Break Doubleheaders

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Softball fans can still get their fill over spring break as the Pitt State Softball team will host home doubleheaders against Northwestern OKlahoma State on Tuesday (March 19) at 2 p.m. and Wednesday (March 20) at noon against No. 23 Winona State.

The Northwestern Oklahoma State Lady Rangers are 9-7 on the season, most recently having split doubleheaders with Arkansas Tech, losing two one-run games on Saturday after winning two two-run games on Friday. NWOSU has a .288 team batting average and a 4.20 ERA.

Winona State comes to Pittsburg with a 13-3 overall record, all of which have been played at neutral sites. The Warriors have won their games by an average of six runs a game. The team won 10 games before their first loss. Three of their wins were over MIAA teams, Washburn (14-2), Lindenwood (10-0) and Truman (12-4). One of the team's three losses was to Fort Hays State (12-2). The team will play at Missouri Southern on Tuesday before coming to Pittsburg. The Warriors have a .374 batting average and a 3.41 ERA. WSU scores just over eight runs a game, while allowing only four runs a game.

Pitt State is coming off a 2-2 MIAA opening weekend. The team swept Northeastern State on Friday before falling in two one-run games to No. 8 Central Oklahoma on Saturday. The Gorillas have a .300 team batting average, led by two players hitting over .400, Tiffany Brown (.419) and Katelyn Birchfield (.410). Pitt State has a 2.05 team ERA, led by Haleigh Sills with a 1.58 ERA. Kyndel Shelburn also has a ERA under 2.00 with a 1.91. She leads the team in strikeouts with 59 in 51.1 innings pitched.
