WICHITA, Kan. -- The PIttsburg State softball team improved to 6-4 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Newman on Wednesday (March 6) afternoon. The Gorillas won the first game 7-5, but shut the Jets out 11-0 in game two.
In game one, Brenna Georga and Jordan Bradshaw paced the Gorillas with 2-for-3 performances. George scored three runs and Bradshaw had three RBI and one run.
George led off the game with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She moved to third on a Tiffany Brown pop up and came home on a Kreslee Ketcham base hit down the left field line for a 1-0 PItt State lead.
Neither team scored in the second or third inning, but the Gorillas opened up the game in the top of the fourth. With one out, Kayla Sears started a Pitt State rally with a base hit to center field. Samantha Grove added a base hit. A Newman error allowed Devon McCreath on base and scored Sears from second. George reached base on a walk. A Bradshaw triple cleared the bases and gave Pitt State a 5-0 lead. A Cheslyn Mitchell base hit through the right side scored Bradshaw for the 6-0 lead.
Newman answered back with a with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Gorillas scored their final run in the sixth. Geroge grabbed her second hit of the day. She then stole two bases and came home on sacrifice fly by Mitchell.
The Jets attempted a combeack in the bottom of the seventh. Three runs scored on three hits, including a home run, and two Gorilla errors.
In addition to her hitting performance, Grove earned her first win of the season in the pitching circle. She gave up four runs on nine hits, only two of the runs were earned. She walked one batter and struck out five.
Pitcher Kyndel Shelburn gave up only to hits in the first shutout win of her career in game two. She walked three batters and struck out nine to improve her record to 2-0 on the season.
Four Pitt State batters had multiple hit games in game two. Mitchell was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Brown was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Sears went 2-for-3 with a doube, a home run, three runs scored and an RBI. Devon McCreath was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
The Gorillas scored first in the second inning as they put up five runs on three hits, three walks and an error. Ketcham led off the inning with a base hit down the left line. Katelyn Birchfield reached on and error and Sears walks to load the bases. Back-to-back walks to Mollt Stiens and McCreath brought home Ketcham and Birchfield for a 2-0 lead. a George ground out added another run. With one out, a Mitchell two RBI double gave Pitt State a 5-0 lead.
A two-out solo home run by Sears in the third put the Gorillas up 6-0.
Pitt State added five more runs in the top of the seventh. Bradshaw walked to lead off the inning. Brown added a one out base hit. Pinch hitter Bre McCracken reached on an error that also allowed Bradshaw to score. BIrchfield hit a three-run shot over the centerfield fence for a 10-0 lead. Sears kept the Gorilas going with a double to right center. With two outs, a McCreath base hit up the middle scored Sears for the final run of the game.
Pitt State will play in the Missouri Southern Invitational this weekend in Joplin. The team is scheduled to play Upper Iowa and Missouri Western on Saturday and Central Missouri and Missouri Southern on Sunday.
