Softball Ends Season With Loss to Truman

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State softball team (28-22) ended its season with a 4-3 loss to Truman in the second round of the MIAA Tournament on Saturday (May 4).

Pitt State scored three runs on seven hits and left eight runners on base. Truman scored its four runs on seven hits and a Gorilla error. The Bulldogs left five runners on.

The Gorillas got a runner on base in every inning except the third. Truman scored all of its runs in the first inning, then added one hit in the second and two in the fourth, but were never able to score another run.

Pitt State started strong in the top of the first as Brenna George led off with a base hit and Catie Cummins drew a walk. Both runners moved into scoring position on a Kreslee Ketcham sacrifice bunt. Tiffany Brown flew out to right and it looked as if George would score, but it was ruled that she did not tag up on the fly ball and was out at third for the third out of the inning.

Truman loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first on a hit, a walk and a Pitt State error. Kristin Grossman drove a base hit through the left side to bring home two runs. Another RBI base hit by Liz Leath brought in the third run. A third consecutive base hit by Cate Simon loaded the bases and force Pitt State to make a pitching change, substituting Kyndel Shelburn for starter Sam Grove. Shelburn delivered a walk to the first batter she face allowing the fourth run to score for the 4-0 Bulldog lead. Shelburn then retired the last three batters to end the inning.

Pitt State scored its first run in the top of the fourth. Ketcham led off the inning with a double to right field. Tiffany Brown drove a base hit to the fence down the left field line to score Ketcham to reduce Truman's lead to 4-1.

The Gorillas brought the game within one with two outs in the top of the seventh. Ketcham was hit by a pitch. Brown hit her 12th home run of the season to right field for the final 4-3 score.

Sam Grove took the loss to end the season with a 7-4 record.she gave up four runs on four hits and a walk. Only three of the runs were earned. Shelburn pitched 6.0 innings in relief and  struck out seven batters while walking one. She scattered three Bulldog hits. Hannah Washburn earned the complete game win. She gave up seven hits, walked three, hit two Pitt State batters and gave up three runs.
