WARRENBURG, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State Volleyball team finished the Peggy Martin Classic with wins over No. 23 Ferris State (3-1) and Winona State (3-0) on Saturday, September 14.

In the first match of the day the Gorillas lost the first set to No. 23 Ferris State, 25-21, but came back to take the match with consecutive wins in the next three sets, 25-12, 25-15 and 25-16. The Gorillas hit at a .269 percentage, whiel Ferris State hit only .113. Pitt State was especially strong defensively, as the team recorded 80 digs in the match, compared to just 59 for the Bullsdogs. 

Crystal Whitten earned a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs. She was one of four players with double digit digs. Abbie Smith also recorded double-digit kills with 15. She had the best hitting percentage for the Gorillas with 15 kills and only two errors in 37 attempts for a .351 attack percentage. Jordan Rehm led the Gorillas with 21 kills, a season high. Ashlen Schwartz and Hayley Hansford each added 11 digs. Hansford also had a double-double as she had 39 assists. Madi Mosier had a good match both serving and at the net. She led the Gorillas with a season-high four service aces and five blocks, two solo and three assisted. Haylee Gregory also had five block assists.

Pitt State defeated Winona State is straight sets, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22. The Gorillas again hit .269, while holding Winona State to a .107 attack percentage. The team also put together 12 team blocks. 

Whitten led the Gorillas with 12 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double. Abbie Smith was just under double figures with nine. She did not commit a hitting error in 29 attempts in the match. Jordan Rehm led the team with 16 digs. Paula Okrutna was a force at the net with nine blocks, two solo and seven assisted. Smith added six block assists to complete a well-rounded game for the senior.

The Gorillas, who are now 3-5 on the season, will begin MIAA play on Tuesday at Central Oklahoma. The match begins at 7 p.m.
