PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The PIttsburg State Softball team will play its 2014 home opener on Saturday, Feb. 22 with a double header against Arkansas Tech beginning at 2 p.m.

Both teams come into the game with a 4-2 record. 

The Golden Suns opened their season on Feb. 9 in Arkadelphia, Ark, earning a 3-1 win over Missouri Western before falling to Cameron, 4-3. The team then played four games at the UAM Eight State Classic, earning wins over Northwest Missouri, 9-4, Drury, 8-0 and Minnesota State, 7-6, while falling to Central Missouri, 10-4.

Arkansas Tech has five players hitting over .300 on the new season. The team is led by Ashley Keen with a .500 (8-for-16) batting average. She and Ashley Savage have each scored five runs this season. Savage is hitting .450 and leads the team in hits with nine and in double with three. Siarra Gomez leads teh team with seven RBI, though Courtney Colunga is not far behind with six. 

Victoria Hule has a team leading 2-0 record and a 2.33 ERA in three appearances. She has pitched 18.0 innings, giving up 11 runs, only six which were earned. She has walked six batters and struck out three. Opponents have hit .354 against her. Jalisa Gum has a 1-1 record in three appearances. Sydenee Clark has made four appearances and has a 0-1 record.

Pitt State is 4-2 after opening the season at the UAM Eight State Classic in Bentonville, Ark. last weekend. The team earned wins over Upper Iowa, 9-5, MInnesota-Duluth, 4-3, Harding, 6-2, and William Jewell, 7-6 in eight innings. The team's two losses were to Minnesota State, 6-4, and Rockhurst, 4-1.

The Gorillas are led by current MIAA Hitter of the Week Tiffany Brown. Brown hit .500 last weekend with a 1.500 slugging percentage, as she hit one double and five home runs in the six games. She leads the team with nine runs scored and 12 RBI. Two additional players are hitting over .300, McKenzie Rynard at .357 and Bailey Letts at .353. Eleven different Gorillas got hits in the opening weekend. 

Samantha Grove leads the pitching staff with a 1.31 ERA and a 2-0 record in four appearances with 16 innings pitched. All 16 of her innings gcame in relief. She gave up four runs, only three of which were earned and held opponents to a .172 batting average. Haleigh Sills and Kylie Harpst each started three games and eah finished the opening weekend with 1-1 records.
